Fashion and art collide in the imagination of ten-year-old designer Max Alexander.
Typically, our young ones are out playing video games or learning to read and write, but child designer Max Alexanderis performing what he calls “the floof test.” He shakes the fabric loose, lifts it over his head, and runs under it. He watches in amazement as it moves, the rise and fall of the fabric, giving it life. Whether shaking loose fabric or tossing up hundreds of ties, he is present, interacting with both his creativity and his creations. A child of many talents; designing, sewing, dyeing fabric, making pasta from scratch, or playing the piano, he reminds us how important the balance between work and play really is. At his age, it seems that nothing feels impossible; given the tools, the space, and the love to create without limits Max is a reminder to hold on to our whimsy in a sometimes dreary world.
Taking the Fashion World by Storm: A Debut at Paris Fashion Week
Ten-year-old Max Alexander prefers a playful approach to life. Instead of sketching solely traditional fashion croquis, his small hands work directly on a dress form. His awe-inspiring rise to notoriety amassing a fandom of 6.4 Million online and drawing a large crowd during his debut at Paris Fashion Week.
More than just a hobby, his seriousness when designing and bringing his ideas to life has drawn the attention of industry giants like Vogue and publications including Harper's Bazaar. The end product of his vision, a line of raw, organic, whimsical, and eco-conscious designs that reflect a futuristic aesthetic and bright future.
At four, Max Alexander announced he was a dressmaker. His mother, surprised but supportive, chose to nurture his talent. An artist herself, Sherri Madison encouraged Max by providing materials, and the result is what we see today in this very young designer. He began sewing classes at the age of five, and that same year completed his first collection, which culminated in the success of his inaugural runway show in Los Angeles, California, in the summer of 2021 (maxalexander.shop).
He entered confidently and adorably, wearing his gold lamé puffer jacket, which he explained was recycled and upcycled from two jackets he found at The Salvation Army. He showcased three additional dresses, two made from coffee bean bags and one from recycled ties.
He later spoke at the United Nations as an advocate for sustainability, promoting the use of eco-friendly, biodegradable, and recycled materials in the fashion industry. In an industry often criticized for excess and exclusivity, Max’s approach feels refreshing and honest. Watching him freestyle his designs is a joy. He sets an example, showing that we can create beautiful things while remaining responsible stewards of the planet for future generations. When asked what he wants people to remember from Paris Fashion Week and his dresses, he answered:
“Just don’t buy fast fashion.”
In a world searching for more conscious ways forward, his vision feels like a reminder that there is hope for the future of fashion and sustainability after all. Keep up with his runway journey on Instagram at @couture.to.the.max or at maxalexander.shop
